We have seen several retail stores use 3D scanning and printing technology in unison as a way to both attract customers and reward them. One example is the recent partnership between Walmart, Hasbro, and 3DPlusMe to put traveling 3D scanning booths in 10 Walmart locations and 2 Sam’s Club stores for part of the month of September, allowing their customers to be scanned, and then printed out as Marvel Super heroes. Overall the booths have been a hit.
KFC is about to get into the game as well, at least in Australia. No, they are not ready to begin 3D printing chicken or even mashed potatoes; however, they are going to be rewarding some of their customers with personalized 3D printed figurines.
To commemorate the launch of their much anticipated Hashbrown Double — a sandwich which replaces the bread with two slabs of fried chicken, and includes ham, cheese, and a hashbrown in the center — they will be giving customers the opportunity to be 3D printed eating one.
Starting on November 10, KFC will be kicking off their ‘Immortalise Yourself Tour.’ Five of their more popular locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Launceston will be decked out with 3D printing/scanning technology. The very first 10 individuals who purchase one of the artery-clogging sandwiches will have the opportunity to be 3D scanned and then printed out as a gold trophy, depicting them chowing down on the Hashbrown Double. At least if they do suffer a coronary catastrophe, their family will have something to forever remember them by.
“Instead of giving fans The Double for just a limited time, we’ll give them The Double for life, and we’re excited to be using the latest 3D printing technology to do just that in a new and fun way,” said KFC Australia’s marketing director, Valerie Kubizniak.
For those residing in or visiting Australia who wish to immortalize their love for the Hashbrown Double by way of a golden 3D printed statue, the following schedule has been released for the KFC ‘Immortalise Yourself Tour’:
- November 10 – KFC Hoxton Park in Sydney
- November 11 – KFC Broadmeadows in Melbourne
- November 12 – KFC Morningside in Brisbane
- November 13 – KFC Modbury in Adelaide
- November 14 – Tasmania’s KFC in Launceston
“The Immortalise Yourself Tour is all about giving KFC fans a unique and fun memento they’ll have for life. We know the Hashbrown Double is decadent and indulgent – so we wanted to give back to our fans in a way that’s a testament to the spirit of the product,” explained Kubizniak.
Let us know if you have immortalized yourself. Feel free to post images as well as details of your scanning experience in the KFC Immortalise Yourself forum thread on 3DPB.com.
